From Planning to Action

Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District No.42 is a strong supporter of innovation and student engagement. Since 2005, our one-to-one program has steadily grown every year. The program is now in every elementary school and most grade six and seven classrooms.

Results from previous years demonstrate clearly that our initial laptop program improved student’s writing. Because of this in the summer of 2008 School District No. 42 together with Apple Canada and Horizons Research coordinated and planned a shift in the laptop program’s focus to 21st Century Skills.

Students today need an increasing array of 21st Century skills that enable them to meet new challenges, solve problems, and use the tools and technology of today and tomorrow. Inquiry and challenge-based learning combine the strengths of traditional learning with new directions that engage students and extend and deepen their learning.

School District No. 42 has refocused its one to one program on 21st Century Skills. Our primary focus is on Inquiry and challenge-based learning that combines the strengths of traditional learning with new directions that engage students and extend and deepen their thinking.
